After the eruption (IRAzu)

This piece was inspired by a visit to the volcano, Irazu, outside San Jose, Costa Rica. Looking down into the huge caldera, I was awed by the stillness that held the evidence of a magnificently powerful event that had blown off the top of a mountain. The patterns in the sculpted draping closely echo the fractured ridges of earth, and the woman’s lap is shaped much like the caldera of the volcano.  For me it has a satisfying balance between realism & abstraction.
